The Department of History, Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages, Desh Bhagat University organized a commemorative event today on 20th February 2024 to mark the 100th anniversary of the historic Jaiton da Morcha. The event aimed to enlighten students into the historical significance of the movement and its impact on Sikh history.
The event commenced with introductory remarks by Prof. Dr. Devinder Kumar, Director, Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages. He shed light on the historical context of Jaiton da Morcha, highlighting its origins, key figures, and demands. Dr. Kumar emphasized the importance of remembering such struggles for their contributions to shaping the social and political landscape of India.
The expert address was delivered by Prof. Dr. Ram Singh Gurna, an eminent scholar of Sikh history. Dr. Gurna’s lecture explored the historical context of Sikh history and placed Jaiton da Morcha within its broader narrative. He discussed the movement’s significance in the fight for religious freedom and its relevance to contemporary times. Dr. Gurna’s analysis provided valuable insights into the complex interplay of faith, identity, and resistance that characterized Jaiton da Morcha.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Kanwaljeet Singh. He expressed his gratitude to the speakers, organizers, and attendees for their contributions to the enriching discussion. Dr. Singh also reiterated the importance of preserving the memory of Jaiton da Morcha and its lessons for future generations
