In a vibrant display of linguistic diversity and cultural unity, the Department of Languages, Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages, Desh Bhagat University, in collaboration with the Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat (EBSB) cell, organized a special program to celebrate International Mother Language Day. The event, held on 21 February 2024, resonated with the theme “Multilingual education is a pillar of intergenerational learning,” highlighting the importance of languages in fostering understanding, knowledge transfer, and cultural appreciation.
Dr. Devinder Kumar Sharma, Director, Department of Languages, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the role of mother languages in shaping individual and collective identities. He stated, “Our mother languages are not just tools for communication; they are custodians of our heritage, carrying within them the wisdom and values passed down through generations. Multilingual education ensures that this legacy is preserved and transmitted effectively, creating a more inclusive and enriching learning environment.”
Dr. Dharminder Singh, Deputy Director Research, Department of Languages, echoed Dr. Devinder Kumar Sharma’s sentiments and stressed the importance of promoting multilingualism in an increasingly interconnected world. He said, “In today’s globalized society, mastering multiple languages opens doors to opportunities across cultures and careers. Multilingual education empowers individuals to connect with different communities, build bridges of understanding, and contribute meaningfully to a diverse and vibrant world.”
The program also featured insightful talks by esteemed faculty members. Dr. Ram Singh Gurna, Professor of History, delved into the historical significance of International Mother Language Day, paying homage to the sacrifices made in Bangladesh to protect linguistic rights. Dr. Ajaypal Singh, Professor of Hindi delivered a thought-provoking speech on the significance of mother languages in preserving cultural heritage and fostering creativity.
The International Mother Language Day celebration emphasized the importance of languages in promoting individual growth, cultural preservation, and national unity. The event served as a reminder that linguistic diversity is a strength, not a barrier, and that multilingual education is key to bridging divides and building a more inclusive and peaceful world.
