Desh Bhagat University’s Seminar Concludes with a Vision for Ethical and Inclusive Development

The two-day National Seminar on “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam: A Bharat-Centric Approach to Holistic Human Development,” organized by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages at Desh Bhagat University in collaboration with the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), concluded successfully on February 3, 2025.

On the second day, the seminar began with an introduction and formal welcome to the distinguished guests and speakers. Dr. Harpreet Singh, Principal of GGN Institute of Management and Technology, Ludhiana, emphasized the importance of nurturing values such as sacrifice and devotion in the younger generation, pointing out that while skill development is a key focus in education, spiritual values that nurture character are often overlooked.

The seminar featured key figures such as Dr. Zora Singh, Chancellor of Desh Bhagat University, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, alongside Dr. Tajinder Kaur, Pro-Chancellor, as the Guest of Honor. Additional dignitaries included Dr. Virinder Singh, Advisor to Chancellor, Vice President Dr. Harsh Sadawarti, Dr. Surjit Kaur Patheja, and Registrar Surinder Pal Kapoor.

Dr. Liisa J. Toivonen, Counsellor for Higher Education and Science Policy at the Embassy of Finland in New Delhi, highlighted that the concept of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” rooted in Indian civilization, reflects the idea of humanity as one global family.

The seminar’s themes included:
  • Ethics, Literature, Language, and Human Development.
  • Economic Models and Resource Utilization.
  • Philosophy of Integral Humanism and Development.

Scholars presented research papers, followed by interactive sessions that encouraged dialogue among participants. Keynote speakers such as Dr. M.S. Nijar, former Registrar of Punjabi University, and Dr. Gurpal Singh Sandhu, Professor at Panjab University, emphasized the interconnectedness of individual and collective well-being and the importance of integrating India’s cultural and philosophical ethos into modern development strategies.

The event concluded with a grand felicitation ceremony recognizing distinguished speakers and participants. Dr. Zora Singh, Chancellor of Desh Bhagat University, stressed that integrating traditional Indian principles such as sustainability, collective welfare, ethical governance, and spiritual well-being into development policies could lead to a more inclusive and balanced future.
