World Bamboo Day Celebrated By DBU Agrim Club
Celebration of World Bamboo Day at Desh Bhagat University
The Agrim Club of the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences, in collaboration with the Swachh Bharat and Unnat Bharat Cell, recently celebrated World Bamboo Day. This annual event is dedicated to raising awareness about bamboo’s significance and promoting its sustainable use.
Importance of Bamboo
World Bamboo Day emphasizes bamboo’s versatility and its benefits, which include:
- Environmental Impact: Bamboo plays a crucial role in carbon sequestration and reducing deforestation.
- Economic Benefits: It contributes to poverty alleviation by providing sustainable livelihoods.
The World Bamboo Organization (WBO) advocates for communities, industries, and governments to harness bamboo’s potential for sustainable living, inspiring global actions towards a greener future.
Event Activities
With the support of university authorities, the celebration featured three engaging activities:
- Debate Competition
- Poster-Making Competition
- Rangoli Competition
A total of 20 students (both B.Sc. and M.Sc.) and 10 faculty members participated, showcasing their creativity and knowledge about bamboo.
Expert Contributions
The event included valuable insights from esteemed faculty:
- Prof. H. K. Sidhu delivered a presentation on the importance of bamboo for both rural and urban communities.
- Mr. Kingston JR Alexander K, an international student in the 2nd year of B.Sc. Agriculture, also shared his perspectives on bamboo’s uses.
