Being a specialization in the postgraduate programme of Dental Surgery (MDS), Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the diseases related to the tooth supporting parts or structures. In other words, the MDS in Periodontics is an emerging specialization in dentistry which involves diseases and treatment procedures of periodontium including gums, alveolar bone and periodontal ligament. Along with this, the branch of periodontics also deals with the placement, affecting conditions, treatment and maintenance of dental implants and peri-implantitis. Thus, a periodontist has particularly been specialized in the preclusion, analysis, and treatment of periodontal diseases and dental implants. Apart from this, they have been imbued with perfection in the application of latest diagnostic and treatment techniques of cosmetic periodontal treatments and oral inflammation. All of the severe tooth supporting treatments such as scaling, root planning, gum surgical procedures, Gum Grafting Procedures, Crown Lengthening, Guided Tissue Bone Regeneration, Sinus Lift, Bone Grafting, Osseous Surgery, Ridge Expansion & Preservation, and root surface debridement have been a role job of a periodontist. Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics is a specialized branch of study that deals with prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, fractured or injured teeth in the mouth. The diseased or fractured teeth are healed by using restorative materials that are biologically approved. The treatment includes various types of direct and indirect restorative techniques and procedures to restore natural form, appearance and functioning of defected teeth due to dental caries, trauma, discoloration, dental malformations of teeth and aesthetic disharmony. Along with this, Conservative Dentistry embraces Operative Dentistry and Endodontics to render treatment and surgical rehabilitation of injured teeth. The integrated branch of Endodontics deals with the diseases, injuries and malformations of dental pulp or periapical and the diseases surrounding the root of the tooth. The branch of Endodontics consists of various surgical and tooth filling procedures such as restoration of carious teeth, Root Canal Treatment, Bleaching of Discolored teeth, Management of traumatized teeth and Endodontic Surgery. Endodontics caters various treatment procedures to dental pain management and any disease caused in dental pulp or any periradicular disease consisting of nerves, arterioles, venules, lymphatic tissue and fibrous tissue. Various common as well as traditional tooth rehabilitation procedures such as root canal therapy, Silver Amalgam restorations, esthetic restorations like Composites and Ceramics, Inlays, Onlays, Single Crown Restoration and root end resections, are some of the important responsibilities of the branch of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics.

MDS (Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics)

Being known as the first crafted and the most prominent specialty in the field of dentistry, the branch of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, deals with the prevention, diagnosis, interception and treatment of any dental and skeletal malocclusion or mal-positions of teeth and jaws both in children and adults. The branch of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics is generally known as the most sought after discipline out of the nine specialties among the students aspiring for MDS after the completion of BDS programme. An Orthodontist skillfully focuses on the proper alignment of teeth and dental arches called the maxilla and mandible. Apart from this, the treatment of any dental and skeletal malocclusion or misalignment in the proper facial structure of teeth and jaws and other abnormalities of the developing or mature orofacial structures falls under the integrated specialty of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Generally, an Orthodontist is known as a doctor specialized for applying braces. The various types of malocclusions require different types of braces or appliances according to the facial abnormalities ranging from simple removable braces to complicated growth modifying appliances and fixed functional braces. In some critical cases, these conventional braces are also preceded with specialized appliances such as headgear and expanders.

MDS (Prosthodontics And Crown & Bridge)

MDS in Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge, also known as dental prosthetics or prosthetic dentistry, is basically a three year postgraduate programme in specialization of Dental Surgery that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and maintenance of oral function through various measures such as fixed prosthesis, dental & maxillofacial implants and removable prosthesis. Thus, Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge is the field of dentistry that is focused on the treatment of a wide gamut of dental problems such as jaw joint problems, partial loss of teeth, deficient teeth, loss of craniofacial structures and loss of oral and maxillofacial tissues. The course has been designed to inculcate research and clinical capabilities in students along with prevention and treatment of Prosthodontics in addition with Crown & Bridge and Implantology The proper handling and usage of artificial or biocompatible substitutes, used in the above mentioned treatments, is also a prominent expertise ingrained in the aspirants through this programme.
